
A rocket company filing to go public sounds like a story for finance people. It isn’t. It’s a story about where AI actually lands — which towns, which businesses, which back roads get the good tools and which get left on dial-up while the cities pull ahead.
That’s the part nobody connects, so I’ll connect it.
This is opinion. I’m reading the pattern, not reporting the prospectus. I’m not going to throw out a valuation or a share price, because I don’t have one I’d stake my name on, and neither does anyone guessing on the internet. What I do have is a read on what a move like this signals — and why it should matter to a plumber in a small town as much as it matters to a hedge fund.
The thing under everything is the pipe
AI feels like it lives in the cloud. It doesn’t. It lives at the end of a wire — or, increasingly, a satellite link. The model can be brilliant, but if the connection to it is garbage, the experience is garbage.
For most of the country that wire has been the bottleneck. Rural broadband is either slow, expensive, or simply not there. A business out past the edge of the cable map has been running on connections that make any real-time tool — a video call, a cloud app, an AI assistant that answers in the moment — a frustrating coin flip.
Starlink is the part of the SpaceX story that touches this directly. It’s a connectivity layer that doesn’t care whether the cable company ran a line down your road. Point a dish at the sky and you’re on. That’s not a small thing. That’s the difference between a remote business being a second-class citizen on the internet and being a full participant.
Take that connection for granted and the AI question changes completely.
Connectivity is the unlock, not the model
Here’s the mechanic most people skip. The hard part of putting capable AI in front of a remote business was never the AI. It was getting a fat, reliable connection to where the AI runs.
When the pipe is reliable, two things open up at once:
- Cloud AI becomes usable everywhere. The good models live in big data centers. A business reaches them over the internet. Make that internet reliable in the places it wasn’t, and the same tools a city office uses are suddenly on the table for a shop three hours from the nearest metro.
- Edge and local AI get a backbone. Running a capable model on your own hardware is already viable. What’s been missing in remote spots is the connective tissue around it — updates, sync, monitoring, the link back to the rest of your stack. Reliable connectivity everywhere is what makes a local-first setup practical instead of an island.
The model was never the gate. The pipe was. Fix the pipe and the gate is gone.
That’s why a connectivity company going public is an AI story. It widens the on-ramp.
A mega-IPO is a signal about the next decade
Set the dishes aside for a second and look at the money, because the money is telling you something.
When a company this size moves to go public, it’s not just a liquidity event. It’s a flare. It tells you where serious, patient capital thinks the next decade lives. And the cluster it points at is hard to miss: space, compute, energy, and AI are converging into one bet.
Think about what these things actually need from each other. AI needs enormous compute. Compute needs power and physical infrastructure. Satellites need launch. Launch needs scale. The connectivity from orbit feeds the businesses that run the AI. It’s not four separate industries — it’s one stack, and capital is starting to price it that way.
I’m not predicting a number. I’m reading a direction. The smart-money story for the back half of this decade is “physical infrastructure for an AI-saturated world,” and a launch-and-connectivity company stepping into public markets is exactly the kind of move that fits that story. Treat it as a weather vane, not a stock tip.
The small-business angle, which is the one I care about
Strip away the orbital mechanics and here’s what’s left for the people I build for.
For a long time, the best tools clustered where the best connections were. Fast internet, dense talent, the works — that’s been a big-city advantage, and it compounded. AI threatened to make it worse, because the most useful AI assumed you had the bandwidth to use it.
The pattern I’m watching reverses that. Two trends are crossing:
- Connectivity is going everywhere. Reliable internet stops being a function of your zip code.
- Capable AI is getting cheap. Open-source models have caught up enough that real capability costs less than a software subscription — and falls every quarter.
Where those two lines cross, the geography stops mattering. A service business on a county road can run the same caliber of front-office automation as a firm downtown. The phone that gets answered when you’re on a job. The text that goes back out to someone who just called and got voicemail. The agent that handles the repetitive back-and-forth so you don’t lose a lead at nine at night. None of that requires being in a city anymore. It requires a reliable connection and a tool that’s gotten cheap enough to be obvious.
That’s the shift hiding inside a rocket-company IPO. Not “stocks go up.” More like: the advantages that used to belong to whoever was wired in are about to belong to whoever decides to use them.
The infrastructure is bending toward “everywhere.” The cost of capable AI is bending toward “cheap.” The only thing that’s still optional is whether a given business actually picks the tools up.
My read
I don’t know what the offering prices at, and I won’t pretend to. What I’m confident about is the shape of it. A connectivity layer that reaches the places cable never did, paired with AI that keeps getting cheaper and more capable, is how the good tools stop being a metro-only perk.
The businesses that win the next few years won’t be the ones nearest the fiber. They’ll be the ones who noticed the playing field flattened and moved first while everyone else was still reading the financial headlines.
